Personalized Learning Services
Personalized Learning Services (PLS) is a professional tutoring program designed to provide specialized one-on-one tutoring to students at Dean College. This fee based service is available to any Dean College student who believes s/he would benefit from individualized tutoring and skill development in the areas of study strategies (note taking, time management and organization, test preparation, test taking), writing, reading comprehension, and/or mathematics. We believe that with professional assistance from an academic coach, students will build upon strengths and address areas of challenge.
The specific needs of students will vary depending on their unique learning profile. For example, some students need to develop stronger organizational and time management skills, while others need to work on reading comprehension strategies; still others need assistance with math skills or writing strategies. That being said, however, the overall goals for all students in PLS are the same:
- to strengthen academic skills
- to encourage self-advocacy
- to increase academic self-confidence
- to develop academic independence
PLS believes that a close partnership with the family is central to helping a student achieve her/his academic goals. A final progress report, which includes a recommendation for level of service for the upcoming semester, is sent to students and families at the end of the semester. As students achieve academic independence, we expect them to take over the main role of communicating with their families about academic progress and future goals.
Students may enroll in PLS for one, two, three, four, or five hours per week, depending upon the student’s learning profile and academic schedule for a given semester. The semester costs for PLS are as follows:
- $800 for one hour of PLS support per week
- $1600 for two hours of PLS support per week
- $2400 for three hours of PLS support per week
- $3200 for four hours of PLS support per week
- $4000 for five hours of PLS support per week
